The Pizza Days are Not Over!

I do love me some pizza, and so I was quite pleased to find that I could still get my fix while remaining plant-based and whole foods! I found this neat site with great step-by-step guidance on how to make the dough from scratch, doctor up some toppings, and bake it to perfection!

Before this food revolution, the idea of making, rising, and baking my own dough would have been a total no-go! Who has the energy for such shenanigans?! But now that I've actually experienced the simplicity, success, and creative energy that accompanies scratch cooking, surmounting the majestic whole foods mountain seems easier than ever! Plus, this dough recipe really isn't that high maintenance. Mix some stuff together. Put it in the fridge. Go about your merry way!

I asked Zach to suspend his ingrained love of cheese and rate the veggie pie from 1-10. The crust alone got an 8 (it sure
did come out tasty, even though it deviated from the typical whole wheat regimen... but hey, sometimes you just have to do what the recipe says). And the pie overall got a 7-7.5! I'll definitely take that from a meat-and-cheese-pizza loyalist! :)

It came out rather pretty, too, except for the rugged crust thing going on... :)

My toppings: Shallots, mushrooms, broccoli, tomato slices, and chopped fresh garlic. I sauteed the veggies (sans tomatoes and garlic) in water and apple cider vinegar with oregano, basil, garlic, onion powder and pepper to taste.

Anyway, the daunting first attempt at making homemade pizza completely from scratch did not end in utter ruination and despair! So I'm pleased... and will certainly attempt a no-nonsense (perhaps completely whole wheat) vegan pizza again!

  1. Make a bunch early and freeze them. Then you can pull it out the night before, let it defrost and rise. I make 10 every few months...easy dinner!

  2. Yes, thank you for the advice! I was tempted to double this batch and save half in the freeze, but I wanted to see how the experiment would play out first! :)

  3. Chris and I love pizza, and a few months ago we decided to start making our own. It's cheaper and better for you. We've experimented with quite a few recipes and finally created what we call "Chris and Sarah's Pizza Dough" :) Since going healthier, we started using whole wheat flour instead of regular, less cheese (or no cheese at all), and a lot more veggies. And if Chris wants more cheese and perhaps some meat, we just split the pizza in two and each build what we want. It's a really fun, yummy meal that we enjoy together regularly. And since making our own, we don't crave greasy, calorie-dense, store-bought pizza anymore!

  4. That's great! Is your dough recipe similar to the one from the site I posted? I'll have to try yours next time! :D
